A Community Network for Bowes Park and Bounds Green
This morning on Radio 4's Broadcasting House a DJ was recalling his favourite record shops. He mentioned one of his favourites which is a little record shop in Palmers Green run by a bloke called Derek.
I wonder who Derek is and where is his shop. It sounds really interesting. Anyone know?
Comment by Richard McKeever on January 20, 2013 at 13:22 Hello Kathleen
Derek Burbage runs The Record Detective Agency at the top end of Palmers Green High Street where it meets Hedge Lane.
It's a small shop, tightly packed with some amazing music ... and if you haven't yet visited a delight is in store! ... but don't just take my word for it, The Record Detective Agency was the final destination of a three-day pilgrimage around UK's independent record shops undertaken by rock journalist Pete Paphides and St Etienne’s Bob Stanley (we have spoken before about Bob's musical partner Pete Wiggs who also has a local connection)
The trip was written-up in an article for the Guardian in 2011 that ends with a lovely story about Martha Reeves (of the Vandellas) based in Derek's shop. Pete Paphides has also written about Derek's shop on his blog Beside the B-Side.
Let us know how you get on if you visit.
Comment by Kathleen Duffy on January 20, 2013 at 20:05 Thanks ever so much Richard for that info, including the Guardian article. I will definitely go up there and take a look round. I think it was Pete Pahides who was on Broadcasting House this morning. They were talking about the disappearance of HMV and Pete was asked about his favourite five record shops - The Record Detective Agency was one.
This website is a fount of information! Thanks very much.
