Hornsey Town Hall (HTH) is a grade II* listed building. Only 4% of listed buildings have this status, the next grade up is Grade 1, e.g. Buckingham Palace. It is an award-winning piece of architecture, now at risk of being sold to developers. There is a note here as to why Hornsey Town Hall should not be disposed of in this way. Come and visit whilst you still can. Here's…See More

Urgent - A call to action about the Earl Haig Memorial Hall, Elder Avenue, Crouch End

It seems matters at the Earl Haig Memorial Hall are now coming to a head.I am pleased that community involvement continues and been asked to circulate this message:You may have heard that the Earl Haig Hall (the old British Legion building) in Elder Avenue in Crouch End was sold at auction yesterday. A local group of residents raised a very significant sum in the hope of buying the building and then setting up a charity to hire it out to local groups. Unfortunately they were outbid. The fear is…See More

Avast there, Jim Lad - swab the decks

The sun was shining so I decided to get out in the garden. I cleared away the furniture from the deck and swept up the leaves, but still the deck was covered in dark green gunk and I know its slippery when wet, so I went the whole hog, got out the pressure washer and cleaned it up. Mainly this is a very satisfying process - the immense difference between before and after can be seen in the picture. There is a part of me though that feels guilty for using up scarce resources (water…See More

I know a dark secluded place - not Hernado's Hideaway but Finsbury Park Track

I've just managed to get back to training at London Heathside Athletic Club after a lay off, so I got to see for myself the conditions on a winter evening when the flood lights are not working. The first thing to say is that the enthusiasm of the athletes remains undiminished. There were several groups of different ages and abilities dotted all over the place, seeing their way by means of temporary battery driven lights and the…See More

Thermostatic Radiator Valves

I have some questions. It seems that over the summer the function in all my Thermostatic Radiator Valves has atrophied. To start with they all seemed to be acting as simple on/off switches, but not reacting to the changes in room temperature at all. This now seems to have deteriorated to the point where all the radiators are on all the time. This makes the rooms uncomfortably warm, and ramps up the running costs of the system. So I need to do something (masterly inactivity would have been my…See More
