Thanks for posting this Hugh.

The Cottage Hospital was one of several across the country supported and founded by John Passmore Edwards, a wealthy publisher who used his fortune philanthropically - and in particular to "Fund the Ladder" supporting projects which enable the poor to climb themselves.

His story is told in a recent book "Funding the Ladder" by Dean Evans and published by local publisher Francis Boutle based in Alexandra Park Road N22.

The hospital was located on the Bounds Green Road - opposite the Tube station - it operated from 1894 until it was demolished in 1983 to be replaced by a three story sheltered housing development which retains the name Passmore Edwards House.

Thanks for this beautiful photograph. As a resident of Passmore Edwards House where this hospital once stood, it was lovely to see it. I showed it to our Scheme Manager.  She's seen a few pics of the hospital, but this is by far the best!

Yes I remember protesting at its intended closure?

It's such a shame that they didn't think to preserve at least part of it.
