Bowes and Bounds Connected

A Community Network for Bowes Park and Bounds Green

Hi All.

My grandfather Sydney Doggett was a member of Wood Green Bowls Club.  He lived in Marlborough Road and died at a young age in 1927.  He was also a member of the Tottenham Canadians Roller Hockey team that played in the first World Championships in Paris in 1910.  He was also a founder of the Glencairn Sports Club in Bounds Green and its secretary for a while.  Quite a sporty chap!

It would be really interesing If anyone has any info about these clubs or can point me in the right direction to find out more.

Hello Valerie

We have one entry on the site which includes some photographs of the Wood Green Bowls Club in its current state of decline - along with a copy of the club's Centenary Publication from 2006 - which might give a bit of an overview. (click on the green booklet cover to read it).

Glencairn still operates as a bowls club today - I've been to few evening events there when the club has been hired out for private parties. The Tottenham Canadians Roller Hockey team sounds fascinating - It is a new one on me! There used to be a purpose built  roller skating rink at the junction of Green Lanes and the North Circular Road - Its now the bus garage... could that be a connection? Roller skating was also popular at Alexandra Palace  in the early years of last century.

The best sources of information about local history are the Bruce Castle Museum and the Hornsey Historical Society.

Whilst it is Enfield borough, not Haringey, there is an exhibition call Our Sporting Life - which is closing at the end of this week in the Dugdale Centre, Enfield  Town.

Thanks for all that information.  It gives me a few more places to look.  Tottenham Canadians became Ilford Canadians I believe, so the plot thickens!
