A Community Network for Bowes Park and Bounds Green
Hi neighbours
Wouldn't it be great to get a Sunday market going on Myddleton Road. Has anyone ever explored this idea?
I was just reading the paper today and saw a story about a group who regenerate old arcades such as Granville Arcade in Brixton, filling empty units with independent retailers and creative spaces. I thought.. how could some of that spirit be transferred to Myddleton road..? I know there are lots of discussions about how it could be regenerated. Thankfully The Step is coming, which will hopefully kick start something, but also it got my mind thinking - a market would bring people to the area, you wouldn't have to deal with property / council / long lost owners issue of empty shops (although obviously it would be great to have them used in better ways eventually), and it would provide a place for local retailers to sell interesting stuff that you don't find in Wood Green!
My brother lives in Clapton and there are a couple of Sunday Markets. Chatsworth Road has become much more interesting with new independent shops. I dont see why Myddleton Road couldn't go the same way.
Lucy.

I have my food hygiene cert, and I'm registered with Haringey Council. To sell food on market stalls you need these and probably public liability insurance

When Haringey are ready if we can wow them with public support I think that would go a long way. Great ideas too. I'm glad we have this forum to brainstorm and record ideas.

I'll keep everyone posted on news from this end.
In the meantime - maybe we should recruit this fish guy from Upton Park. Lol!
Enjoy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETSl8gWsFZ0&feature=share

It's brilliant that this initiative has come so far.
Today I heard about an event happening on May 25th which might help with the next stages.
High Street Camp is a free one day event sharing learning between people who have experience of regenerating neighbourhoods.

Someone told me about your plans, brilliant idea!
I'm also starting a market, in Harringay, and it might be an idea to get together and discuss our plans, if you like.
Let me know what you think of that.

Permalink Reply by VGB on April 29, 2012 at 20:47 Hello, I'm new to the area - and to the forum - and love the idea of a weekend market on Myddleton Rd. Reading through the discussion thread it feels like there's a real groundswell building around re-energising the area, of which a regular market along Myddleton Rd would help develop further.
Earlier in the thread, the Portas Review into the future of UK high streets is mentioned. In today's Observer magazine, one of the features takes its cue from Portas' recommendations asking six 'big thinkers' for their ideas about how to breathe new life into the high street. Not all of them are relevant for Myddleton Rd - but it makes for interesting reading and I thought one or two of the ideas in there might provide inspiration for others: Can anyone save our high streets? www.guardian.co.uk/society/2012/apr/28/high-streets

Permalink Reply by Lucy Whitehead on May 1, 2012 at 10:01 thanks Victoria, just proves what an important, timely topic regeneration is, and though Myddleton Road is not a town high street it could certainly benefit from fresh ideas!

Do you want to put life back into your high street or town centre? Are you part of a Town Team, have you bid to become one of the Portas Pilots, or are you just someone who wants to get on and improve the centre of your community? If so, then High Street Camp is for you!High Street Camp (#highstcamp on Twitter) is an unconference - a chance for people who want to get things done to get together, hear from people who've already had a go, share experiences and come up with new ideas. It's a participative event, not a series of lectures or presentations - a chance to roll your sleeves up and work with other people who share your concerns and interests.More details and registration are here it is free to attend.
Hi Guys...hope plans are going well for the Sunday Market. Thought you would like to know we have a Vintage Market in the garden at The Step today as part of AP and Beyond between 11-4. Not linked to the plans on here but hopefully a good little tester for future plans. We also have a yummy locally made cakes stall with ice cream tubs and juices too! Be lovely to see you all.
Thanks Nell and Mit
