A Community Network for Bowes Park and Bounds Green
I knew Tottenham Farm was quite extensive, but I didn't realise it went so far.. My road was previously part of a farm (main house on Devonshire Hill Lane) and then part of Tottenham Potteries on White Hart Lane. The clay soil and the extensive rivers presented part of the problems when building on this area: Thetford Close and Haringey Sports centre would have been developed years ago but they couldn't overcome these issues until 30 years ago - the 'hill' at the sports stadium is actually built up from the soil excavation to develop Thetford Close, and they decided to put in a sports centre as opposed to more housing.
Ops! Error on my part.
NOT Tottenham Farm. Tottenham Wood House. Which was up near the junction of Albert Road and Alexander Road. Durnsford Rec? sort of area.
Information from O.S. map of 1894-1896.
There was a laundry sited where the garden center is now. Bounds Green Pottery is between Scout Park and the railway tunnel.
I will have to have a look for the deeds see if they have any more info, its the handwritten variety.
The Laundry - (Wood Green and Hornsey Laundry set up in the 1890s) was actually the other side of the road from the garden centre - it was adjacent to the Muswell Stream and the building - particularly the distinctive boiler chimney - can still be seen as discussed here.
Thanks for the clarification Peter and thank you Richard, for those links! I remember the swimming pool from when I was younger, I have a vague memory that my elder brother's school (Arnos Grove) used to go there..
